Fighters from the AFC/M23 coalition have taken control of Nzibira town in Walungu Territory, South Kivu, following intense clashes with the FARDC and allied militias.
The fighting escalated on Sunday, September 21, 2025, culminating in M23 defeating government forces and their Wazalendo allies.
According to Radio Okapi, the heaviest battles occurred in Cisaza, Cibanda, Muyange, Karhuliza, and Kalongo. Reports indicate that the clashes were so fierce that M23 deployed armored vehicles and other heavy weaponry.
Nzibira is one of the major towns in South Kivu, known for its rich deposits of cassiterite and gold. Previously under strong FARDC control, its fall is expected to carry significant consequences.

On the same day, heavy fighting was also reported in North Kivu, particularly in the Masisi and Walikale areas.
With the capture of Nzibira, M23 expands its presence in South Kivu, adding to areas it already controls, including Bukavu, and reportedly extending into Mwenga, Kabare, Fizi, and Uvira.
