The coalition forces of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), M23, and MRDP–Twirwaneho, which oppose the government of President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, have seized control of Kaniola, a locality in South Kivu Province, eastern DRC.

Kaniola is one of the largest localities in Walungu Territory, South Kivu Province.

According to reports from the area, the takeover occurred on Thursday, August 7, 2025, following heavy fighting. Government forces and their allies were forced to retreat in disarray.

In addition to the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), the Burundian army (FDNB), and Wazalendo militias fleeing the battlefield, a large number of civilians also fled to safer areas.

Currently, AFC/M23/MRDP forces have full control over Kaniola and its surrounding areas.

A local source confirmed:

“AFC/M23/MRDP has taken Kaniola in Walungu Territory after intense clashes with FARDC and its allies, who eventually abandoned their positions.”

This capture comes shortly after AFC/M23/MRDP forces expelled the Congolese army coalition from an area above Kavumu in Kabare Territory. The group has also recently seized several strategic areas in Rutshuru, Lubero, and Walikale territories.
