Walikale, DR Congo – The AFC/M23 rebel group, which is fighting against the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has repelled a major offensive by the Wazalendo coalition after hours of intense fighting on Bueni Hill, a strategic location in Walikale Territory, North Kivu Province.

The clashes broke out on the night of Saturday, September 13, 2025, when Wazalendo fighters launched a coordinated attack aimed at dislodging AFC/M23 forces from their positions. The battle, which took place between the Luberike and Waloa Yungu groupements, was described as fierce and sustained, with heavy gunfire reported throughout the night.

By Sunday morning, September 14, calm had returned to the area after the fighting subsided, with no further gunfire heard, according to local outlet Actualité.

Wazalendo forces have been attempting to capture Bueni Hill since June 2025, viewing it as a crucial stronghold in their campaign against AFC/M23. However, the rebel group successfully held its ground once again, forcing Wazalendo fighters to retreat back toward Waloa Yungu.

AFC/M23 first took control of Bueni Hill in June during an operation that drove Wazalendo forces out of their previous base in Buhimba, also located within Waloa Yungu groupement. The hill’s strategic location has since made it a key point of contention in the ongoing conflict.

This latest battle underscores the fragile security situation in eastern DR Congo, where rival militias and armed groups continue to fight for territorial control. Analysts warn that AFC/M23’s victory may strengthen its influence across Walikale and other parts of North Kivu, while Wazalendo forces are expected to regroup and launch further offensives. The continued clashes raise fears of worsening instability and displacement among civilians already affected by years of violence in the region.
