In the wake of the tragic death of Kenyan blogger and high school teacher Albert Omondi Ojwang’, his father Meshack Ojwang’ Opiyo has come forward to clarify growing confusion surrounding the existence of multiple paybill numbers meant to support the bereaved family.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the sacrifices you have made since Albert’s death,” Meshack began, his voice steady but laced with sorrow. “We have come this far because of your support, through prayers, phone calls, and comforting messages. Thank you for treating Albert like your son and brother.”
With a heartfelt message, he acknowledged the goodwill of many Kenyans who were eager to help but found themselves confused by the circulation of multiple paybill numbers. He clarified that the family had secured an official, verified paybill number, emphasizing transparency and accountability.

“It was a difficult task, but ultimately, we obtained the official family paybill. It has been verified,” Meshack stated. “I understand there are other paybills intended to help, but we will consolidate everything in the end so that we can move forward together.”
In the video, Meshack’s wife and daughter-in-law stood silently behind him, their faces reflecting the weight of grief. Despite the heartbreak, the family remains focused not only on laying Albert to rest but also on pursuing justice for his untimely death.
Renowned activist Njeri Wa Migwi later confirmed the family’s safety, responding to public concern over their well-being.
“This family is in mourning and is currently in a safe house. It’s unfortunate that Albert’s father had to come forward to confirm that the paybill number he shared is correct,” she said.
Following the video’s release, Kenyans took to social media to show solidarity, praise Meshack’s wisdom, and express concern over the safety of the grieving family.
Fay Faith wrote: “I was worried they would pay him a visit and silence him forever… Kazi nzuri. Let him be safe until the killer and those who gave the orders are brought to justice.”
Linda Mokeira commented: “They took the son’s life. Let them allow this family to bury him in peace. God protect and keep this family safe 🙏.”
Timo N. Kamau offered his condolences: “Huyu Mzee ni mwenye hekima na maarifa sana. Pole sana for the loss of your dear son.”
Galistus Marshall remarked: “One thing I’ve noticed about this Mzee—he is educated. His speech reflects wisdom and calm, even while grieving. Mzee is smart.”
The paybill confusion escalated after comedian Eric Omondi and activist Hanifa Farsafi launched separate fundraising campaigns. The move was met with skepticism, with some accusing the two of potentially politicizing or profiting from the tragedy.
Both Omondi and Farsafi have since issued clarifications, insisting their intentions were genuine. Nevertheless, the situation sparked important conversations about coordination, transparency, and ethical responsibility during public mourning.
