The transfer drama between Alexander Isak, Newcastle United, and Liverpool has turned into one of the most heated stories of the summer. The Swedish striker, who once had the love of the Tyneside fans, is now facing criticism from former players, pundits, and even some of his old supporters.

Isak has been a star for Newcastle since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022. He helped the Magpies qualify for the Champions League twice and quickly became one of the world’s top strikers. But this summer, his reputation has taken a hit after he refused to join the club’s pre-season tour and was told to train alone.

Liverpool, eager to sign him, reportedly offered £120 million for the striker. Newcastle turned it down. The asking price? £150 million.

While some see Isak’s actions as a player trying to secure his dream move, many others believe he has gone about it the wrong way. Here’s how football’s big names are reacting to the saga.

Former striker Ally McCoist believes Newcastle fans have every right to be angry.

“I think he’s acted poorly,” McCoist told Mirror Sport. “You can’t sign a contract for three or four years and then throw your toys out of the pram. Newcastle fans won’t let you get away with that.” He Said.

Ex-Newcastle boss Alan Pardew says the club is right to dig its heels in.

“The transfer can’t be done now because Newcastle are angry,” he told talkSPORT. “His agents told him to throw down the tools, and he’s holding the club to ransom. That’s not right.” He said.

Former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor agrees Isak should face consequences.

“He refused to go on tour, walked out of training, and trained with Real Sociedad,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT. “That sets a bad example. He should be punished.” He said.

Ex-England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips believes Isak owes his teammates better treatment.

“You’re not just affecting the club; you’re affecting the players you’ve battled with,” he told AceOdds.com. “Have respect, turn up to training, and then go home.” He said.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher thinks Isak has simply reached a higher level.

“Sometimes a player outgrows the team,” Carragher said on The Overlap. “He can play for a side that can win the Champions League. That’s the problem Newcastle now face.” He said.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has sympathy for Isak.

“This isn’t strange,” Owen said. “It’s high-profile, yes, but this happens all the time. Newcastle have to decide whether to keep an unhappy player or take the money.” He said.

Newcastle’s all-time top scorer Alan Shearer says there’s no point forcing a player to stay.

“If someone meets Newcastle’s price, then take it,” Shearer said on The Rest Is Football. “Say thank you for the memories and move on.” He said.

As the saga continues, Liverpool’s interest seems to have cooled after their huge bid was rejected. Newcastle’s position is firm: unless a record-breaking offer comes in, Isak stays.

Whether this ends with Isak in a Liverpool shirt or staying at St. James’ Park, one thing is certain, his relationship with Newcastle fans will never be quite the same again.
