A wave of excitement swept through the streets of Nairobi’s Central Business District on Wednesday morning as Embakasi East MP Babu Owino made a surprise appearance, joining thousands of Gen Z demonstrators marking the anniversary of last year’s deadly anti-Finance Bill protests.

In viral footage circulating online, Babu Owino—known for his fiery rhetoric and strong youth support, was seen being lifted by jubilant protesters as he marched in solidarity with the movement. The MP’s presence electrified the already charged crowd, drawing loud cheers and chants as he addressed them briefly.

“What I will tell my Gen-Z brothers and sisters is to fight on, soldier on. It is not over until it is over,” said Babu on Tuesday, ahead of the protests.

He added, “I’m with you at 101 per cent. Do it, make us proud, we are with you.”

The protests on June 25 commemorate one year since the now-infamous demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024, which tragically claimed the lives of at least 60 young Kenyans. The anniversary has reignited calls for justice and deeper accountability within government institutions.

While peaceful in most parts, the demonstrations are taking place under heavy police presence. Authorities have mounted roadblocks across major entry points into Nairobi’s CBD, particularly around Parliament Road and Kenyatta Avenue. Police have also shut down access to the Parliament precinct, fearing a repeat of last year’s dramatic breach.

On June 25, 2024, thousands of protesters stormed Parliament in an unprecedented act of civil disobedience. Overwhelming security forces, the Gen Z-led crowd forced its way into the National Assembly, with some even helping themselves to lunch in the MPs’ canteen. The day ended in tragedy after police responded with force, leading to multiple deaths and injuries.

Today, that moment remains etched in the collective memory of Kenya’s youth, a symbol of resistance, sacrifice, and unfinished business.

As a precaution, most businesses in Nairobi’s CBD remained closed, with many fearing damage or looting. City Hall ordered a recall of inspectorate officers to aid in managing the crowd and support security operations. In Kitengela, a group of early-morning demonstrators was quickly dispersed by authorities.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, speaking on Tuesday evening, urged protesters to remain peaceful and avoid protected zones such as Parliament and State House.

“The police will remain vigilant. We encourage protesters to operate within the law,” Kanja said.

Babu Owino’s open show of support signals a notable shift in political engagement with Gen Z, a demographic that has largely remained disillusioned with mainstream leadership. Whether his involvement boosts trust or draws skepticism remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the youth are not backing down, and their message is loud, clear, and growing.
