Kenyans have been urged to brace for a turbulent spell as the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) issues a high alert warning of strong winds and dangerous wave activity expected to batter parts of the country over the next six days.
In a detailed weather advisory released on Friday, June 13, the agency cautioned that the adverse weather could lead to significant structural damage, widespread marine disruptions, and safety hazards across 15 counties.

Kenya Met forecasts that residents should prepare for: Strong southerly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) on Friday across the North-Eastern, North-Western, South-Eastern lowlands, and Coastal regions.
An intensification of winds to over 30 knots (15.4 m/s) from Saturday, June 14, through Tuesday, June 17. A slight decline back to 25 knots on Wednesday, June 18.

In tandem with the wind alert, sea conditions are expected to deteriorate: Wave heights exceeding 2.5 metres are predicted on Friday. A further spike to 2.8 metres from Saturday to Tuesday is anticipated. Conditions should calm slightly by Wednesday, with waves dropping to below 2.4 metres.
The warning specifically targets residents and stakeholders in the following counties: Coastal: Mombasa, Lamu, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Tana River
Lowland and Dry Regions: Kitui, Makueni, Garissa, Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, Wajir
These areas, which fall within the coastal belt and dry lowlands, face the greatest risk of damage from the incoming weather systems. The advisory notes a moderate to high likelihood (33–66%) of the events occurring.
Kenya Met warns that the effects could be far-reaching: Blown-off rooftops and falling trees, Reduced visibility for motorists and marine navigation and Interruption of economic activities such as fishing, water sports, and sea transport
Previous advisories led the County Government of Mombasa to temporarily shut down public beaches and suspend all marine activities. A similar response could be expected if the situation worsens.
The department has called on residents, especially those in high-risk zones, to: Avoid unnecessary travel or marine excursions. Secure loose structures or lightweight roofing materials.
Emergency teams are reportedly on standby, and residents are advised to stay informed through official Kenya Met channels and county government alerts.
As climate patterns continue to shift, such warnings are becoming more frequent and more intense. Residents, businesses, and local governments must work together to ensure preparedness and safety for all.
