Arsenal may be edging closer to landing Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, but complications at Sporting Lisbon threaten to derail what could be one of the summer’s biggest deals.

The 27-year-old forward, who enjoyed a sensational season with Sporting, has reportedly turned down a move to Manchester United, despite interest from former manager Ruben Amorim. United were keen to reunite the pair, but Gyokeres was not convinced by the club’s offer.

Instead, the former Coventry City striker is believed to favor a move to Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta keen on bolstering his attacking options. The Gunners are said to have had a £55 million bid rejected by Sporting, triggering a dispute that could complicate the transfer.

At the heart of the issue lies a supposed gentleman’s agreement between Gyokeres and Sporting, stating that offers above £51 million would trigger his release. Complicating matters further is a clause in his original contract guaranteeing agent Hasan Cetinkaya 10% of any rejected offer over that amount.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas appears unfazed by the backlash, insisting the club will not be pressured.

“Sporting will not accept blackmail and insults, you should know me better by now,” he declared, signaling that only the £84 million buyout clause will guarantee Gyokeres’ release.

This has reportedly frustrated the striker, although Gyokeres moved to calm speculation of internal conflict, stating:

“There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.”

Despite the tension, Arsenal are expected to return with a second bid, hoping to negotiate terms with Sporting and Gyokeres’ representatives. Arteta sees Gyokeres as a critical piece in his quest for silverware next season, especially given the club’s struggles to convert chances in key matches.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s hunt for a striker continues after Gyokeres’ snub. Having already missed out on Liam Delap, who joined Chelsea, the Red Devils are now reportedly exploring a move for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. However, his sky-high wage demands, rumored to be £500,000 per week, could pose a significant challenge.

Osimhen is also attracting interest from Saudi Arabia and Turkish giants Galatasaray, adding to the uncertainty around his future.

As the transfer window heats up, all eyes are now on Sporting. Will they soften their stance and negotiate a deal below the £84 million clause, or will Arsenal be forced to walk away?

For Gyokeres, the next few weeks could determine whether he fulfills his Premier League dream, or stays in Lisbon for another season of drama.
