Manchester United’s bold pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo has hit an unexpected wall, and it’s not about money alone. Despite weeks of negotiations and multiple bids, including a hefty £60 million offer, the Red Devils find themselves no closer to signing the 25-year-old Cameroon international.
The reason? Brentford’s internal reshuffle, with Keith Andrews now taking charge after Thomas Frank’s departure to Tottenham, has upended the entire deal.
Brentford’s appointment of Andrews, previously an assistant, has added a twist that no one at Old Trafford saw coming. Sources close to the Manchester club suggest that Andrews has no intention of losing Mbeumo, especially after his stellar season in which he scored 20 goals and became the Bees’ main attacking threat following Ivan Toney’s exit.

Manchester United, under pressure to reinforce their attacking options before the US pre-season tour, had identified Mbeumo as a priority target.
His speed, technical ability, and eye for goal made him the perfect fit for United’s frontline ambitions. And with the player himself open, even eager, to make the move, it seemed like only a matter of time.
But Brentford’s stance remains unshakable. The club’s director of football, Phil Giles, made it clear that the Bees will only let Mbeumo leave under one condition: if it makes complete financial sense for them. Speaking candidly, Giles stated:
“We’ve made our point clear. If Bryan earned a massive move now and it was right for us financially, we’d be open to it. But if he ended up here with us next season, I wouldn’t be massively surprised. We’d be delighted. And it would save me a massive headache, frankly.”
The headache for United, however, is far from over. Their last bid fell well short of Brentford’s valuation, and the club now faces the dual challenge of bridging the financial gap and convincing Andrews to let go of his top talent.
Mbeumo’s potential move still dangles in the balance. The financial upside for the player is massive, a contract at United would reportedly double his wages. Behind the scenes, talks continue, and Brentford are reportedly eyeing Ipswich’s Omari Hutchinson as a possible replacement should Mbeumo depart.
While Tottenham have taken their hunt in a different direction after hiring Thomas Frank, United were expected to strike swiftly. Instead, they now find themselves racing against time, managerial ambition, and Brentford’s firm resolve.
With the Premier League season approaching and Mbeumo still donning the red and white of Brentford, the transfer saga is far from over. Will Manchester United come back with an irresistible bid? Or has Keith Andrews already made his first big win, keeping his star man at the Gtech Community Stadium?
Stay tuned.
