Since taking power in the September 30, 2022 coup, Captain Traoré has emerged as a key figure in the region’s political evolution. At just 36 years old, he is Africa’s youngest head of state, known for his patriotic rhetoric, anti-colonial stance, and strong commitment to national security.
Under his leadership, Burkina Faso has significantly reshaped its foreign policy severing military ties with France and aligning more closely with Russia, Mali, and Niger. In January 2024, the country formally exited the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) alongside Mali and Niger, marking a major shift in regional alliances.
Internally, Traoré has overseen comprehensive reforms in the armed forces and local defense groups, particularly the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP). His government has reclaimed strategic territories and launched recovery programs in conflict-affected zones, focusing on infrastructure rehabilitation and the reintegration of displaced populations.
Despite ongoing criticism from international observers regarding political freedoms and the pace of the transition, Captain Traoré continues to enjoy widespread popular support, especially among rural populations who see him as a symbol of patriotism, resilience, and national pride.
His Eid message serves as a reaffirmation of his vision: a united, secure, and sovereign Burkina Faso.
Eid Mubarak to all Burkinabè citizens and members of the global diaspora.
