Fresh details are emerging in the mysterious death of Kenyan blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, shedding light on a suspected cover-up operation deep within Central Police Station. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reportedly arrested a CCTV technician accused of tampering with surveillance footage linked to Ojwang’s final hours.

According to sources close to the matter, the technician, who installed all 25 surveillance cameras at the Central Police Station in 2024, was apprehended on the morning of Friday, June 13, during a targeted raid at his home in a densely populated Nairobi estate.

The arrest follows chilling revelations that, on June 8, the technician was summoned early in the morning by a police officer. He was allegedly instructed to report to the station immediately, where he was directed to the office housing the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) responsible for storing security footage.

Once there, the technician claims he was asked to delete footage specifically from June 6 and 7, the critical 48-hour window during which Ojwang was held in custody and later died under suspicious circumstances. He reportedly told officers that selective deletion was not possible and that only full formatting of the DVR could erase the data, an action he says he did not perform. Nevertheless, he was allegedly handed Ksh3,000 by a senior officer after the visit.

These revelations align with a damning statement by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), whose deputy chairperson Ann Wanjiku confirmed before the Senate that footage at the station had been “interfered with.” The authority, which launched its own probe after learning of Ojwang’s death through the media, uncovered inconsistencies in the official police narrative.

“The CCTV system at the OCS’s office had been tampered with,” Wanjiku stated during the Senate hearing.

Ojwang’s death has sent shockwaves across Kenya. The blogger, who doubled as a schoolteacher, was arrested at his Homa Bay home on Friday, June 7, by DCI officers for allegedly publishing false information online. He was booked into Central Police Station later that evening.

Police claim he died by suicide, saying he repeatedly hit his head against the cell wall. But an autopsy commissioned by independent pathologists contradicted the police narrative. It revealed that Ojwang died from head trauma, neck compression, and soft tissue injuries, injuries highly inconsistent with self-harm.

The case has since ignited public outrage and raised serious concerns about accountability within the National Police Service. Civil society groups are now demanding transparency, and pressure is mounting on Inspector General Douglas Kanja to respond to allegations of foul play, obstruction of justice, and abuse of office.

As the investigation deepens, the arrest of the CCTV technician may be just the beginning of a much larger unraveling.
