Manchester United could be about to pull off one of the most surprising transfers of the summer: signing Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain.

According to fresh reports, Donnarumma is interested in joining United after PSG moved closer to sealing the signing of Lille’s goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier. This move could open the door for the Italy captain to swap Paris for Old Trafford.

The news has sent football fans buzzing, especially because Donnarumma is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world. The 25-year-old has been a massive part of PSG’s dominance in recent years.

Last season, Donnarumma played 47 matches in all competitions, helping PSG win the Champions League, Ligue 1, and the Coupe de France. This made them the first French club ever to win a continental treble.

However, things have recently taken a turn. Donnarumma’s current PSG contract runs until 2026, but talks about a new deal have stalled. With PSG preparing for a future without him, it seems his time in Paris might be coming to an end.

French outlet L’Equipe reports that PSG have already agreed to pay €40 million (£35m) for Lucas Chevalier, not including bonuses. The 23-year-old goalkeeper is seen as the future of PSG’s goalkeeping department.

The club wants to finalise Chevalier’s transfer quickly, ideally before their European Super Cup clash against Tottenham on August 13. Once that deal is done, the path for Donnarumma’s exit becomes much clearer.

In England, TEAMtalk claims that Manchester United have formally registered their interest in the Italian shot-stopper. However, they admit that signing him will be “very difficult” at the moment, though football transfers can change in an instant.

For Donnarumma, the appeal of Old Trafford is strong. Despite United missing out on the Champions League next season and coming off their worst-ever Premier League finish, the club’s global stature remains a major attraction.

At United, there is already a first-choice goalkeeper, Andre Onana, but his position has been under pressure. Since joining from Inter Milan in 2023, Onana has faced criticism for several high-profile mistakes.

Earlier this summer, Onana was asked about his future and gave a cryptic answer: “Will I leave? I don’t know, we’ll see!” This uncertainty has only fuelled the rumours.

United’s new boss, Ruben Amorim, has publicly backed Onana to bounce back. “Even Tom [Heaton] is leaner, Altay [Bayindir] did really well, and Onana will be better this year,” Amorim said in a press conference.

The Portuguese coach believes the whole squad is in better shape. He spoke about how the club has improved nutrition, training preparation, and organisation compared to last season. “We have people now that help us to be better. I’m not concerned with small things like last year. That helps me focus on the game and the team.”

Despite his confidence in Onana, Amorim is a manager who knows the importance of strong competition for every position. Signing Donnarumma would create one of the most intense goalkeeping battles in football.

For Donnarumma, moving to United could also be a chance to step into the Premier League spotlight, something he’s never experienced. The challenge of helping United return to glory might be too tempting to ignore.

On the PSG side, selling Donnarumma would be a bold move, but with Chevalier coming in, they might feel the timing is right. Football clubs often sell stars before their contract situations become a problem.

If this transfer goes ahead, it could be one of the headline deals of the summer, shaking up both PSG and Manchester United’s plans for the future.

For now, the football world waits: will Donnarumma stay in Paris, or will he be pulling on a United shirt before the new season kicks off?
