Gospel singer Justina Syokau , widely known for her viral “Twendi Twendi” hits, has officially declared her intention to vie for the Women Representative seat in Machakos County in the 2027 General Elections.
Syokau becomes the latest Kenyan celebrity to transition into elective politics, making the announcement during a media interview on Thursday, January 15, 2025. She said her decision is rooted in a strong desire to serve the people of Machakos and to scale up the community initiatives she has supported over the years, particularly those targeting vulnerable groups.
Drawing from her personal history, Syokau said her life experiences have shaped her resolve to lead with empathy and purpose. She shared that her upbringing was marked by hardship, a reality that, in her view, enables her to understand the struggles faced by many women and girls across the county.
“Mimi nataka kukuwa Women Rep Machakos County… nimekuwa nikigive back kwa girl child initiative,” she said, noting that her long-standing involvement in girl-child programs reflects her commitment to social empowerment.
The singer spoke candidly about growing up as an orphan and enduring poverty, including attending school without basic necessities such as sanitary pads. She said these experiences instilled resilience and a sense of responsibility that she hopes to translate into practical leadership.
According to Syokau, her agenda will prioritize education for both boys and girls, while also putting in place supportive mechanisms to help parents meet their children’s schooling needs more effectively.
She also appealed to her supporters to recognize her political ambition, asking them to begin addressing her as “Mheshimiwa” or “Women Rep of Machakos” as a sign of confidence in her journey.
On party affiliation, Syokau confirmed she will contest on a United Democratic Alliance ticket and voiced her support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid, affirming her alignment with the ruling party and its leadership.
