General Makanika Will Forever Remain in Our Hearts: Message from CEO-OFFICER Jean de Dieu on This Day of Remembrance

On this historic date, the Banyamulenge community across the world remembers the passing of General Makanika, a man known as an unforgettable hero in the struggle to protect the people of Minembwe and the wider South Kivu region.

General Makanika was a man recognized for his extraordinary courage, his love for people, and his relentless commitment to peace and the defense of his people’s rights. Throughout his life, he stood up against injustice and massacres targeting the Banyamulenge, becoming a pillar of hope and reassurance.

Message from CEO-OFFICER Jean de Dieu

In his special message on this day of remembrance, CEO-OFFICER Jean de Dieu, Peace Ambassador of the Banyamulenge in Australia, said:

“General Makanika was a tireless hero. He was an example of refusing to be defeated by injustice and of refusing to remain silent in the face of evil. Today, we remember him as a brother who left us a legacy of loving peace, defending ourselves, and fighting for our rights. He will never leave our hearts.”

He went on to say:

“Remembering General Makanika is not only about looking back at history, but also about carrying forward the legacy he left. It is a legacy we must pass on to our children so that they will continue the journey of resisting injustice and building lasting peace in our hills of Kivu.”

An Everlasting Memory

Since his passing on February 19, 2025, the name of General Makanika has become a symbol of courage for the Banyamulenge and for all who knew him. Those who knew him affirm that he was a humble man with a powerful voice for peace and justice.

For the Banyamulenge, this day is not just one of sorrow and tears; it is a time of unity, reflection, and renewed commitment to ensure that the legacy of General Makanika lives on through the actions and conduct of each individual.

Voices of the Banyamulenge Community

In various testimonies from the Banyamulenge, deep emotions are expressed about how General Makanika was like a father and a protector to them.

“He gave us hope in times when we had lost everything. He was like a light reminding us not to be swallowed by darkness,” said Sebinama, a resident of Minembwe.

“Although he is no longer with us, his spirit still speaks for us. He will forever be our eternal hero,” said Nyantungane, a young girl who remembers how much he loved them.

“His death left us with sorrow, but also with the legacy of continuing to fight for our survival. He will forever remain in our hearts as an unforgettable hero,” said Bagaza, an elder Banyamulenge living abroad.

A Day to Strive for Peace

For CEO-OFFICER Jean de Dieu, this date of February 19 carries a powerful lesson:
