The Kenyan government has released over KSh 44.24 billion in capitation funds to public schools across the country as preparations intensify for the reopening of schools on Monday, January 5, 2026.

The funds are intended to support the smooth running of basic education institutions, covering both primary and secondary schools under the government’s free education program.

According to the Ministry of Education, the allocations are broken down as follows:
Free Primary Education: KSh 3.7 billion

Free Day Junior Secondary Education: KSh 14.45 billion

Free Day Senior Secondary Education: KSh 26.08 billion

The Ministry has urged school heads to use the funds prudently, emphasizing that no extra levies or unauthorized fees should be imposed on learners. Field officers from the Ministry will monitor schools to ensure adherence to the academic calendar and proper management of resources.

In addition, learners transitioning to senior school under the Grade 10 and CBC system are expected to report from January 12, 2026.

Parents and guardians who wish to request placement reviews can do so between January 6 and 9, 2026, through the official placement portal.

Education experts say the release of capitation funds ahead of the new term is critical for ensuring schools are fully operational. It allows institutions to cover essential expenses such as teaching materials, classroom utilities, and administrative operations, helping to minimize disruptions as learners return to school.

The capitation release also underscores the government’s commitment to free and compulsory basic education, a cornerstone of Kenya’s education policy aimed at providing every child with the opportunity to learn without financial barriers.
