In a shocking and dramatic turn of events, Naivasha Member of Parliament Jayne Njeri Wanjiku Kihara was arrested on Thursday, July 17, 2025, by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The arrest, which was streamed live on her Facebook account, has ignited a political firestorm, with Kihara calling the move a blatant act of political persecution.

The arrest came after Kihara reportedly failed to honor a police summons related to accusations of incitement and undermining a public officer, charges covered under Section 132 of Kenya’s Penal Code.
Earlier this week, Assistant Inspector General of Police George Lenny Kisaka issued a letter stating that the lawmaker was suspected to be either directly involved in or possessing key information about statements that allegedly undermined the authority of public officers.

As dozens of armed detectives stormed her home in the Maraigushu area of Naivasha, Kihara went live on Facebook, documenting the moment as officers entered her compound.
“Dozens of police officers are currently at my Maraigushu home to arrest me,” she told her followers, moments before being taken into custody.
She was first transported to Naivasha Police Station for preliminary questioning before being moved to the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road, Nairobi.
Kihara, a vocal ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, declared moments after her arrest that she was unaware of any concrete charges against her.
“There is nothing. They are just telling me that I might have investigations that may aid in investigations, which I really don’t know what they are talking about,” she said.
She also revealed that the summons allegedly originated from Nairobi and that a senior DCI official was awaiting her arrival for further interrogation.
“The summons is said to have come from Nairobi, and the director is waiting for me there. So we will go there and see what happens,” she added.
Kihara did not hold back in her criticism of the government, accusing state agencies of weaponizing the criminal justice system to silence dissenting voices.
“The days of intimidating leaders using the criminal justice system are long gone. Summoning me to DCI headquarters tomorrow will not change Kenyans’ resolve because it’s not about Jayne Kihara but about our country, Kenya,” she declared defiantly.
According to the legal notice sent to her earlier this week, Kihara was ordered to appear before DCI officers on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 10:30 am. The letter clearly warned that non-compliance could result in prosecution.
Kihara’s arrest not only raises questions about freedom of speech and political expression in Kenya but also reflects increasing tensions between the current administration and perceived opposition voices.
As the country edges closer to the next general elections, the arrest of a sitting MP on incitement charges will likely deepen the political divide and stir further debate about governance, justice, and democratic space.
With the nation watching closely, many Kenyans are waiting to see whether Jayne Kihara’s arrest was the result of legitimate legal concerns, or a chilling signal to opposition leaders everywhere.
