The Milimani Children’s Court has sentenced a 28-year-old teacher to 15 years in prison for defiling a 16-year-old student in Kawangware, Nairobi, a case that has reignited national concern over child safety and abuse of power within Kenya’s education sector.
Fredrick Oundo was convicted and sentenced by Chief Magistrate Hon. Ochoi after the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court heard that Oundo lured the minor with a false promise of helping him secure a scholarship, only to subject him to sexual abuse.
During testimony, the victim revealed that the teacher manipulated him emotionally and referred to him as his “wife.” The magistrate, while delivering judgment, condemned the act as a grave abuse of trust and a betrayal of the teacher’s professional duty.
“The accused took advantage of his position as an educator to exploit a child who looked up to him for guidance and support. Such conduct cannot be tolerated in a society that values the protection of minors,” the court ruled.

The prosecution, led by Ms. Linda Ndambiri and Ms. Grace Musambi, told the court that Oundo’s conduct was calculated and predatory, taking advantage of the boy’s hope for a better future.
The judgment comes at a time when Kenya’s education and justice sectors face increasing scrutiny over how cases of sexual abuse in schools are investigated and prosecuted. Rights groups have long argued that teachers accused of defilement are often shielded by weak oversight and delayed justice.
Legal experts say the sentence sends a strong signal to educators and public servants in positions of trust. It underscores the state’s zero-tolerance stance on child sexual exploitation, aligning with Kenya’s commitment to international child protection conventions.
The convicted teacher will serve a 15-year jail term without the option of a fine.
