Kenya’s love for football is growing stronger, and now, political leaders are showing their support in big ways.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has promised to sponsor 500 football fans to attend the next three matches of the Harambee Stars in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.

This announcement came just hours after the Harambee Stars’ exciting 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in their Group A opening match on Sunday, August 3.

Kalonzo, like millions of Kenyans, watched the match closely, cheering on the national team. Though he was not at the Moi International Sports Complex, he shared photos and videos of himself watching the game with other important figures.

Austine Odhiambo, the playmaker from Gor Mahia, scored the only goal of the match. His first-half goal was enough to secure the win for Kenya. The stadium was filled with excitement and hope.

Kalonzo’s decision to sponsor fans came as a way to continue building the momentum. He made the announcement through a message posted on social media.

He said, “Football is a universal language that brings people together, regardless of their background or politics. I am sponsoring 500 fans to attend the next three CHAN matches at Kasarani Stadium, through the Kenya Football Fans Federation (KEFOFA), where I serve as the patron.”

This kind gesture has already started conversations across the country. Fans see this as a rare moment when politics is being used to support something positive and unifying.

On the day of the game, tens of thousands of fans showed up to support the team. Some were at the stadium gates as early as 11 a.m., passing through tight security checks before filling the stands.

By the time the referee blew the halftime whistle, the stadium was almost full, and the Harambee Stars were leading 1-0.

The next matches will be very important. Kenya faces Angola on August 7, followed by a tough match against Morocco on August 10. The last Group A match will be against Zambia on August 17.

All of Kenya’s group matches will be played at the renovated Moi International Sports Centre, which has become a symbol of national pride.

Besides Kalonzo, other leaders from different political sides also praised the team. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Congratulations, Harambee Stars, on your 1-0 win against DR Congo.”

Even President William Ruto joined in, showing support for the players before the match. He promised some very exciting rewards to motivate them.

The biggest promise? Ksh1 million for each player for every match they win in the 19-team tournament. That’s a massive show of belief in the team.

This is a moment when Kenya is united, not in politics, but in sports, joy, and national pride.

Kalonzo’s move to send 500 fans to the stadium is being seen as more than just sponsorship. It’s a way of saying that football can be a tool for unity, hope, and peace.

For the young players representing the country, this support gives them more energy to fight for Kenya on the pitch.

The Harambee Stars now know the whole country is behind them, and that includes the leaders, fans, and families watching from home.

Kenya’s journey in CHAN 2025 has started with a win. With this kind of unity, who knows how far the team can go?

Let’s fill the stadium. Let’s fly the Kenyan flag. And let’s believe in the stars that wear our jersey.
