“If you’re spending more money now than you did in the previous election, just know you’re going home mapema. Ask me!” said Kanini Kega
Former Kieni MP and close Uhuru Kenyatta ally Kanini Kega has issued a sobering warning to Kenya’s political class as the 2027 elections draw near: “Overspending in campaigns is a red flag, you’re likely to lose.”

Taking to social media on July 2, Kega drew from his own political journey to caution politicians who are digging deep into their pockets in hopes of securing reelection. According to him, massive campaign spending is not a sign of strength, but a predictor of electoral defeat.
Kega’s post appeared to reflect on his own experience, having lost his Kieni MP seat in the 2022 general elections. His words were clear and biting:

Kega’s journey is one marked by both resilience and missteps. After failed attempts in 2002 and 2007, he finally won the Kieni seat in 2013 and served two terms. During this time, he rose to become National Secretary General of the ruling Jubilee Party and one of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s most trusted allies.
However, in 2022, he was defeated by Njoroge Wainaina of the UDA, a blow that he would later blame on his support for Raila Odinga, the ODM leader. According to Kega, his decision to back Odinga did not resonate with Mount Kenya voters, and it cost him dearly.
After his electoral defeat, Kega stayed politically active. Together with Sabina Chege, he took over the Jubilee Party leadership in what was controversially termed as an ‘unconstitutional coup.’ But the tide turned again.
A High Court ruling recently nullified the leadership changes, effectively restoring former President Uhuru Kenyatta to full control of the party, and stripping Kega and Chege of authority.
Despite the domestic setbacks, Kega found a new role at the regional level. In November 2022, he was appointed to represent Kenya at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), bringing him back into the political fold through diplomacy.
Having been through both wins and losses, and having served in positions of influence, Kega’s words carry weight. His warning taps into a broader narrative that money alone does not guarantee political survival. In fact, excessive campaign spending may indicate desperation, not dominance.
As Kenya heads towards the 2027 elections, Kega’s statement might become prophetic for some of today’s high rollers on the campaign trail.
