Tension is at an all-time high after Kaplong Girls High School was abruptly closed indefinitely following a dramatic student protest over alleged misconduct by a male teacher.

The unfolding scandal has triggered widespread anger, especially among parents, alumni, and education stakeholders who are now demanding urgent action and justice.

The protest erupted after several students reportedly came forward accusing a teacher of repeated inappropriate behavior. According to unconfirmed reports, the teacher allegedly lured students into his office and sent them explicit messages, sparking outrage among the student body.

Eyewitnesses claim that he even engaged in inappropriate conversations with the girls. While these allegations remain unverified, the level of unrest they sparked was enough to shut down the entire institution.

Principal Claire Mitei confirmed the school’s closure, stating the decision was taken to restore calm and allow authorities to investigate. However, the situation spiraled during the protest, as students vandalized school property, smashing dormitory and classroom windows and pelting the school bus with stones.

This incident is the latest in a troubling series of misconduct cases involving teachers in Kenyan schools. Just last week, a teacher at Alliance Girls High School was sent on a 30-day compulsory leave by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) following allegations of abuse.

Acting TSC CEO Evaleen Mitei confirmed the disciplinary move, stating the teacher had breached several regulations under the Teachers Service Commission Act and the Code of Regulations for Teachers.

The Alliance case came to light after a chilling exposé by Africa Uncensored, titled “The Teacher and the System.” The investigative piece detailed over two decades of alleged abuse by the teacher, who used his influence as a Christian Union patron to manipulate and exploit vulnerable students.

With education officials and law enforcement already deployed to Kaplong Girls, many Kenyans are now questioning how many more cases have been hidden or ignored in the school system.

As the investigations unfold, there is rising pressure on the Ministry of Education and TSC to implement stricter vetting and monitoring mechanisms to protect students from harmful behavior in schools.

The nation is watching, and for the young girls of Kaplong and beyond, justice must be swift, and lasting.
