Kenya braces for prolonged April rains as Met warns of floods, reveals hardest-hit areas

Nairobi, Kenya   – Kenya is bracing for a wetter and potentially disruptive April after the Kenya Meteorological Department warned that heavy rains will continue across large parts of the country.

In its latest advisory, the weatherman indicated that although rainfall may begin at relatively lower levels in early April, it is expected to intensify as the month progresses, raising concerns over possible flooding in several regions.

The Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and surrounding areas are likely to experience widespread rainfall, with occasional heavy storms expected near the borders of Uganda and South Sudan.

Areas east of the Rift Valley including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Kiambu, and Embu are also forecast to receive above-normal rainfall. Residents in these regions should prepare for cooler daytime temperatures accompanied by intermittent storms.

The Meteorological Department attributes the ongoing rains to the seasonal movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which draws moist air from the Indian Ocean and the Congo Basin, leading to increased rainfall, particularly across central and western Kenya.

In northeastern Kenya, counties such as Marsabit, Wajir, and Mandera are expected to record above-average rainfall. However, the coastal region is likely to experience below-normal rainfall during this period.

Other parts of the country including western Kenya, Nyanza, central highlands, and sections of the Rift Valley are projected to receive near-normal rainfall.

Meanwhile, reduced rainfall is expected in eastern Turkana and Samburu, as well as in parts of Garissa and Isiolo, although occasional storms may still occur.

Most parts of the country will experience warm and wet conditions, with daytime temperatures ranging between 20°C and 32°C. Highland areas will remain relatively cooler due to elevation, while northeastern and coastal regions are expected to record higher daytime temperatures. Nights will be cooler in highland areas but warmer in lowland regions.

The department has also warned that flooding witnessed in March could recur this month, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Authorities have been urged to closely monitor river levels and ensure drainage systems remain clear to prevent potential disasters. Farmers have been advised to improve drainage on their farms, clear blocked water channels, and avoid activities that may damage saturated soils.

Road agencies have also been put on alert, with heavy rains expected to cause damage and disrupt transport systems in several parts of the country.
