The Catholic faithful are in deep mourning following the passing of Bishop Emeritus Rt Rev Philip Sulumeti, a revered spiritual leader whose decades of service left an indelible mark on the Kakamega Diocese and the wider Church in Kenya.

Bishop Sulumeti, who passed away peacefully at the age of 85, was celebrated for his humility, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the Gospel. Throughout his ministry, he inspired countless priests, religious leaders, and lay faithful, becoming a guiding light in both spiritual and social matters.

At St. Mary’s Cathedral in Kakamega, parishioners gathered in prayer and song, remembering a shepherd who devoted his life to serving God and His people. “Bishop Sulumeti lived the Gospel in every aspect of his life,” said Sister Esther Wanjiku, a long-time member of the diocesan council. “He taught us to walk humbly with God, care for the vulnerable, and always place faith at the centre of our lives.”

Ordained a bishop in 1993, Rt Rev Sulumeti was known for his pastoral outreach, often traveling to remote parishes to ensure no member of his flock was spiritually neglected. His life was a testament to service, marked by compassion, wisdom, and steadfast faith.

Beyond his spiritual leadership, Bishop Sulumeti championed education and community development. He played a key role in establishing schools, health programs, and initiatives for marginalized communities, reflecting the Church’s mission of holistic care.

The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) issued a statement expressing profound sorrow at his passing, urging the faithful to pray for the eternal repose of his soul. “We give thanks to God for the life of Bishop Philip Sulumeti, a shepherd who faithfully served the Church and the people of Kakamega. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the statement read.

Funeral arrangements are underway, with a memorial Mass expected to draw clergy, local leaders, and thousands of faithful from across Kenya. For many, Bishop Sulumeti’s legacy will endure through the priests he mentored, the communities he uplifted, and the countless lives he touched with his faith, wisdom, and compassion.

As the Catholic community reflects on his life, they are reminded of his guiding words: “Serve God with humility, love your neighbour, and let your faith shine in all you do.” In remembering Bishop Sulumeti, Catholics celebrate a life fully devoted to Christ and His mission on Earth.
