As Kenyans prepare for the much-anticipated end-of-year festivities, media personality and radio host Kwambox has renewed calls for a ban on fireworks, citing growing concerns over their impact on residents and animals.

In a statement shared on social media, Kwambox highlighted that the loud explosions and bright flashes associated with fireworks can cause significant distress to household pets, wildlife, and vulnerable community members, including children and the elderly.

“I urge celebrants to consider ways of marking the season that do not cause unnecessary suffering to other living beings,” she said, noting that animals have much more sensitive hearing than humans and often panic when fireworks are set off.

Kwambox’s call echoes warnings from several animal welfare organisations locally and internationally, including SPCA branches across southern Africa who have repeatedly urged the public to protect pets from the psychological and physical harm caused by fireworks, noting increases in stray and distressed animals during festive periods.

Shelters such as those in Polokwane and Tshwane report pets fleeing homes in fear and injuries sustained while trying to escape the noise, also encouraged communities to “say no to fireworks” and adopt quieter or alternative celebrations to safeguard pets and wildlife from fear and trauma.

The debate over fireworks comes as communities across the region and globe increasingly weigh tradition against concerns for animal welfare, public safety and noise pollution.

While fireworks remain a traditional part of festive celebrations, Kwambox and fellow advocates are urging Kenyans to reflect on the broader impacts of these displays and consider safer, more inclusive ways to celebrate as the holiday season approaches.
