Liverpool fans hoping for a big-name striker signing this summer may be left disappointed after new twists in the transfer market. Newcastle United have refused Liverpool’s £110 million offer for Alexander Isak, while the Magpies’ own plan to replace him with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko has just hit a wall.
Newcastle placed a strong bid of £65.5 million plus over £4 million in add-ons for Benjamin Sesko, the 21-year-old goal machine from Slovenia. However, RB Leipzig rejected the bid, calling the deal unacceptable in terms of structure and total value.

Even though the initial fee seemed to meet Leipzig’s demands, they weren’t happy with how the full package was laid out. As a result, Sesko was left out of Leipzig’s friendly match against Atalanta, adding more heat to the transfer saga.
But here’s where it gets even more interesting. Manchester United are also chasing Sesko, and talks with both the player and Leipzig have already taken place. United are expected to step up negotiations once their U.S. tour wraps up.

Sesko is under contract until 2029, so Leipzig is not under pressure to sell. His agent, Elvis Basanovic, has made it clear in the past that Sesko is only interested in a “special project with a special coach.” That statement has now caught the attention of Manchester United, whose fans are buzzing with speculation.
While Liverpool waits, their dream of landing Alexander Isak seems even further away. Newcastle not only rejected their £110 million bid, but they also didn’t encourage a follow-up offer. Isak, who missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour in Asia, has returned to train with his former club Real Sociedad, but his future still hangs in the air.
Speaking about the bid from Liverpool, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said:
“I was made aware of a bid yesterday (Friday) and that bid was turned down, all before I’d even heard about it. People back in England are dealing with the situation. I don’t know what happens next. From our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.”
It’s a frustrating moment for Liverpool. Their attempt to get a top striker in Isak is blocked. And now, even if Newcastle wanted to sell him, they’d need a strong replacement, like Sesko, but their first bid has failed.
If Manchester United beat Newcastle to sign Sesko, Liverpool’s hopes of Isak may be crushed completely. Arsenal, another Premier League club, had previously shown interest in Sesko too, but their efforts seem to have cooled off.
Meanwhile, United are in a better position financially. Even without selling players, they have enough room to bring in a striker, which gives them an advantage over both Liverpool and Newcastle.
Time is running out, and all eyes are now on what Manchester United will do next. Will they make a firm bid and hijack the Sesko move? Or will Leipzig continue to hold onto their prized talent?
One thing is for sure: Liverpool’s road to signing a striker is full of twists, and it’s getting harder every day.
