Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson didn’t need a scouting report or transfer rumor to recognize the talent of Florian Wirtz, he saw it firsthand as the German star ripped through Scotland’s midfield at Euro 2024.

Now, Robertson’s early instincts could soon be backed up by a record-breaking move as Liverpool battle to bring the Bayer Leverkusen sensation to Anfield.

The Reds have made no secret of their admiration for the 21-year-old playmaker, who lit up last season with 16 goals and 13 assists in all competitions. His goal against Scotland, a stunning long-range strike to open Germany’s emphatic 5-1 win, was more than just a highlight. For Robertson, it was a warning.

“He was excellent against us,” Robertson told Sky Sports. “He was causing us all sorts of problems in the half space, running behind, mixing it up. You could just tell, he’s going to be a top player.”

Despite Liverpool’s determination, negotiations have been anything but easy. Leverkusen are standing firm on a massive £126 million price tag, a fee that would smash the British transfer record.

Liverpool’s latest offer reportedly reached £114 million, but the Bundesliga champions rejected it. The Reds are hoping to sweeten the deal with performance-based add-ons or even a player swap, with Curtis Jones rumored to be of interest to the German club.

From Anfield’s perspective, the hesitation isn’t about Wirtz’s talent, it’s about the weight of history. Becoming Britain’s most expensive player comes with pressure, and Liverpool are keen to avoid saddling their young target with that burden.

But within the dressing room, the mood is clear. Robertson and the squad would welcome Wirtz with open arms.

“We’ve already got a lot of exciting talent, and if he gets through the door, he’ll only add to that,” Robertson said. “We’ll be excited to play with him.”

While fans wait for updates, one thing is undeniable: Florian Wirtz has left a mark, not just on Euro 2024, but on Liverpool’s transfer radar. And for Andy Robertson, one devastating match was all it took to see what Wirtz could bring to Merseyside.
