A normal Saturday night turned into a nightmare along the dangerous Mai Mahiu road when an ENA Coach bus was hit by a speeding trailer.

The bus, which was travelling from Nairobi to Migori, was carrying 47 passengers and three crew members. By the end of the night, lives had been lost, and dozens were nursing injuries.

ENA Coach Investments Limited has confirmed that two people, an adult woman and a child, died in the crash. Several others were rushed to hospital with injuries.

Most of the injured have now been treated and discharged, but the memory of the accident will haunt survivors for a long time.

The accident happened around 11 pm on Saturday night. Witnesses say the bus was navigating the dangerous Mai Mahiu steep climb when the trailer behind it lost control.

The trailer’s brakes are believed to have failed, causing it to ram into the bus from behind. The impact pushed the bus off balance, overturning it on the roadside.

Other vehicles, including personal cars, were caught up in the chaos. Some were left mangled in the middle of the road.

Photos from the scene show twisted metal, shattered glass, and the overturned ENA bus lying on its side. It was a grim reminder of how fast life can change.

Police and rescue teams rushed to the scene to help survivors. Those with serious injuries were taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched an investigation to find out exactly what went wrong.

This accident comes just a day after another deadly crash in Kisumu County, which claimed 25 lives. That tragedy happened when a school bus carrying mourners from a funeral veered off the road and overturned into a ditch.

In the Kisumu crash, 10 women, 10 men, and one girl died at the scene. Twenty others were injured, and four more passed away later in hospital.

If that was not enough, another fatal accident happened on Thursday in Naivasha. Nine people died after a Kenya Pipeline Company bus collided with a cargo train at Morendat Junction.

In that incident, the bus had attempted to cross the railway line in front of an oncoming train. The train driver tried to stop but couldn’t in time.

Kenya has been mourning almost daily in the past week due to deadly road crashes.

Road safety experts say the Mai Mahiu area is known for its dangerous bends and steep climbs, which often cause brake failures in heavy vehicles.

Authorities are now under pressure to find lasting solutions, including stricter vehicle inspections, better road design, and improved driver training.

For the families who lost loved ones in the Mai Mahiu accident, no explanation will heal the pain.

For survivors, the memory of that night, the screeching brakes, the loud crash, and the sudden darkness, will never fade.

Once again, Kenya is left asking: How many more lives must be lost before the roads are made safer?
