Manchester United have failed in their attempt to sign Aston Villa’s top goalkeeper, Emiliano “Emi” Martinez. The Red Devils made a surprise loan offer for the Argentine star over the weekend. But Aston Villa quickly said “no.”
This rejection is a big blow for Manchester United, who are looking for solutions in their goalkeeping department. Their current first-choice keeper, Andre Onana, is injured. He has a hamstring problem and might miss the start of the Premier League season.

The move for Emi Martinez was part of United’s plan to solve this crisis. But Aston Villa showed no interest in letting their No.1 leave, even temporarily. Villa still value him highly, around £40 million. They believe he is too important to their team.
Martinez played his last home game of the season in a very emotional way. Some fans thought he might be saying goodbye. However, he turned down a big-money move to Saudi Arabia earlier this summer. That showed he wants to stay in Europe and keep playing competitive football.

Last season, Martinez was sent off at Old Trafford on the final day. That match ended in a 2-0 loss for Villa, and they missed out on the Champions League. Manchester United, on the other hand, celebrated the win, but now they are the ones struggling.
After that match, Aston Villa coach Unai Emery spoke to the media. He said he was happy with Martinez and that the goalkeeper still had a contract with the club. When asked if Martinez would leave, Emery said, “I don’t know. You can ask him.”
Despite the rumors, no real talks about selling Martinez have been confirmed. Villa’s strong rejection of the loan move shows they plan to keep him, at least for now.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim now faces a problem. His main goalkeeper is injured. The season opener against Arsenal is coming fast, on August 17. Without Onana, United may need a strong backup, but Martinez is clearly not an option anymore.
United have also been linked to Belgian keeper Senne Lammens, who plays for Royal Antwerp. But even that deal is not simple. The Belgian club is asking for £17 million for their young star. That is still a big amount for a backup goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are busy in the transfer market. They just completed the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. It took weeks of negotiations. The total cost is £71 million with all the add-ons included. That makes Mbeumo the most expensive player ever sold by Brentford.
Mbeumo becomes United’s second major signing of the summer. Earlier, they also brought in Matheus Cunha from Wolves. These new signings show United are serious about building a strong team for the new season.
But even with these new players, the goalkeeper problem remains. Onana’s injury has come at the worst time. Ten Hag must now decide if he trusts the backup options or if he needs to find someone new fast.
Martinez would have been a perfect short-term fix. He is experienced, a World Cup winner, and already knows the Premier League. But Aston Villa’s answer was clear: he is not for sale or for loan.
This failed move could also affect other players. Ruben Amorim, the Portuguese coach who has been following Martinez, might now need to look elsewhere too.
Manchester United fans are now asking: What’s next? Will the club try again for another goalkeeper? Will Onana recover in time? Or will this become a major problem that hurts their start to the season?
One thing is sure: time is running out. And in football, timing can change everything.
