A heart-wrenching tragedy has struck Mikindani Primary School in Jomvu, Mombasa County, after a school bus accident claimed the life of a beloved teacher and left 12 students injured.

The fatal crash occurred on the evening of Thursday, July 3, at the Maasai area along the Taita Taveta-Mombasa highway, as the school bus was returning from Kenyatta High School, where the students had participated in a regional music and drama festival.

According to authorities, the teacher, who had accompanied the students to the cultural event, died at the scene. Out of the 12 students who were injured, two sustained serious injuries while 10 suffered minor wounds.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the school community and beyond.

Local MP Badi Twalib confirmed the devastating news and offered his condolences to the grieving families.

Speaking after visiting the victims and meeting their parents, the Jomvu lawmaker expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that the students had made their school proud during the festival, only to return to unimaginable heartbreak.

“These children had just finished representing their school with pride in a cultural event. It’s beyond heartbreaking that such a joyous moment has ended in tragedy,” said MP Twalib.

Emergency services responded swiftly, and the injured students were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The names of the victims have not yet been released as families and school officials grapple with the aftermath.

The accident has once again sparked urgent conversations around the safety of school transport in Kenya, especially during long-distance extracurricular trips.

As the community mourns the loss of an educator and prays for the swift recovery of the injured children, Kenyans on social media have expressed an outpouring of grief and solidarity using the hashtag #MikindaniTragedy.
