A peaceful bishop’s retirement event in Embu County on Sunday, June 29, 2025, erupted into chaos after Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia publicly announced plans to impeach Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, sparking outrage among attendees and a near-violent confrontation.

During the event honoring Bishop Njeru Nyaga, MP Kaguchia took an unexpected political turn, accusing CS Murkomen of authorizing police officers to shoot unarmed young Kenyans during recent protests. He declared that, alongside Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji and other MPs, he would be sponsoring a motion to remove Murkomen from office.

Kaguchia stated, “You heard the government say that if the youth show up, they will be killed, and 17 were killed. Murkomen, our CS, then said any man or woman who comes close to a police station will be shot, saying that that is instructions from above. We want to condemn those remarks completely.” This statement triggered immediate backlash from the crowd, with many shouting “hapana” (no) and attempting to drown out his speech.

The tension escalated rapidly as some attendees stormed the dais, forcibly snatching the microphone from Kaguchia and cutting short his speech.

The crowd’s anger grew, and physical attacks on the MP were narrowly prevented by church leaders who intervened to protect him. Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, present at the event, condemned the political outburst, urging calm and insisting the occasion remain focused on the bishop’s retirement.

The controversy centers on CS Murkomen’s recent remarks instructing police officers to shoot anyone approaching police stations with criminal intent, a statement that has drawn widespread condemnation. Murkomen defended his comments, claiming they were taken out of context and intended only to authorize police self-defense against imminent threats.

However, opposition lawmakers, activists, and prominent figures such as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have denounced Murkomen’s remarks as unconstitutional and dangerous. Odinga remarked, “Anybody giving instructions to a police officer to shoot anyone who gets near a police station, it’s a big shame. Shame on you. We should not encourage taking away life in a way that is not constitutional.”

This incident at the church vividly illustrates the deep divisions and heightened political tensions gripping Kenya, where debates over security, governance, and human rights are increasingly spilling into public and sacred spaces. The planned impeachment motion against Murkomen signals an intensifying battle in Parliament, as MPs align over the handling of youth protests and police conduct.

As this political drama unfolds, it raises urgent questions about the balance between security and civil liberties in Kenya, the role of political leaders in calming or fueling unrest, and the sanctity of religious spaces amidst national turmoil. The Embu church confrontation will undoubtedly be remembered as a flashpoint in Kenya’s ongoing struggle over justice, accountability, and the future of its democracy.

This story continues to develop as Parliament prepares to debate the impeachment motion and the public awaits further responses from CS Murkomen and the government. The nation watches closely, with hopes for peaceful resolution and respect for constitutional order
