Nairobi is preparing for a big football event, but that also means big changes on the roads. The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicks off this Sunday, August 3, and Kenyan football fans are ready to cheer on the Harambee Stars.

However, city residents and travelers should get ready for serious traffic changes and road closures across key areas of the capital.

The Nairobi traffic police, led by boss Joseph Chirchir, have issued an important warning. Major roads will be closed or partially closed to manage the crowds and ensure safety near the stadiums. These changes will begin Sunday and could last throughout the tournament, which runs until August 18.

One of the first roads affected is Aerodrome Road, which will be fully closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout. This closure will especially impact people traveling to Nyayo Stadium.

Lang’ata Road, another busy Nairobi highway, will also see partial closure between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts. Expect traffic delays here on Sunday and during other key matches.

Mombasa Road will be partially closed as well. One lane will be blocked between Lusaka Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout, again due to events at Nyayo Stadium.

To reduce the pressure on the roads, the Nairobi County Traffic Police have shared alternative routes. Motorists coming from Mombasa Road into the city center are advised to use Likoni-Enterprise Road at General Motors, where they can connect to the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.

If you’re driving on Lang’ata Road, you can take Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at the Mbagathi Roundabout to reach the city.

Those heading out of town from Nairobi CBD toward Juja or Thika should avoid Thika Road and instead use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road to ease congestion.

Matatus ferrying fans and visitors to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani are advised to use Ruaraka Baba Dodo Road and Ngomongo Road leading to the Ngomongo Roundabout. This is expected to ease the pressure on the main roads around the stadium.

Motorists coming from Thika Road into the CBD can also consider the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road as smarter options.

Kenya’s home stadiums – Nyayo Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani – will be hosting a number of important matches. Apart from Harambee Stars’ game against the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 3, fans can also look forward to other exciting clashes.

At Nyayo Stadium, key matches include: Morocco vs Angola – August 3, DRC vs Zambia – August 7, Zambia vs Angola – August 10, Morocco vs Zambia – August 14, DRC vs Morocco – August 17, Algeria vs Niger – August 18

Meanwhile, at Kasarani, the big match is Angola vs DRC on August 15.

With fans coming from across Kenya and beyond, traffic in Nairobi is expected to be heavy, especially around the stadiums. Motorists are urged to leave early, use suggested alternative routes, and stay tuned for real-time traffic updates from the police.

The 2024 CHAN tournament is not only about football, it’s a big moment for Kenya as host, showcasing its stadiums, hospitality, and football spirit. But with the excitement comes the need for patience and good planning.

If you’re heading to the stadium or just trying to get around Nairobi this weekend, be prepared for diversions and delays. Your best move? Follow the police routes and avoid the main hotspots.

Let’s support the Harambee Stars and enjoy CHAN 2024, but let’s also keep Nairobi moving!
