The victims, two motorcyclists, a pedestrian, and a passenger aboard the ill-fated trailer, were all pronounced dead at the scene.

According to eyewitnesses and preliminary police reports, the trailer veered off its lane and tore through the traffic, leaving behind a trail of twisted metal and devastation.

The Motorists Association of Kenya confirmed the grisly incident and swiftly issued a public safety alert urging drivers to exercise maximum caution along the Narok–Mai Mahiu route, a notorious stretch that has increasingly become a death trap.

“Take care – Narok Mai Mahiu fatal road crash at Nairekia Engare near the SGR. Be alert,” the association posted online.

Authorities rushed to the crash site to contain the situation and launch investigations into what exactly caused the trailer to lose control. Brake failure is being considered a likely cause, echoing a disturbing pattern of similar accidents in the region.

This latest crash adds to the growing list of road carnages on the Narok–Mai Mahiu highway, which has seen increased traffic and dangerous driving conditions in recent months.

Just two weeks earlier, on June 28, another horrifying crash claimed the lives of two people, including Chief Inspector George Rotich Kipchumba, a respected senior officer at the Narok Traffic Base.

That accident occurred in the Maduro area when a trailer reportedly lost its brakes and plowed into two private vehicles, a Toyota Prado TX and a Toyota G-Touring.

Sikika Road Safety, an active motorists’ advocacy group, was among the first responders in both incidents, helping rush the injured to nearby hospitals and raising awareness online.

Tragedy struck again this past Sunday in a separate multi-vehicle accident between Kinungi and Flyover. This crash, compounded by thick fog and freezing temperatures, caused a major traffic jam that brought movement to a near halt for hours.

Poor visibility on the highway made driving extremely risky, highlighting the dangerous combination of weather and increasing traffic along this critical transport corridor.

As investigations continue and the community mourns the lives lost, road safety advocates are renewing calls for urgent action to address the deteriorating conditions on Kenya’s highways.

From mechanical inspections to stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better driver education, many believe it’s time to turn the tide before more lives are lost on the road.
