Parents across the country have flocked uniform shops and bookshops as the new school term draws closer, triggering a last-minute rush for essential learning materials ahead of reopening.
In major towns including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru, traders reported heavy foot traffic as parents moved from one outlet to another searching for school uniforms, textbooks, shoes and stationery.
Many shoppers were seen queuing at popular bookshops and roadside uniform stalls, with some starting as early as dawn to beat the crowds. The rush has, however, been accompanied by growing concern over the rising cost of back-to-school items.
Parents interviewed said prices of uniforms, shoes and textbooks have gone up compared to last year, putting pressure on already strained household budgets. Some families said they were forced to prioritise essential items only, while others opted for second-hand uniforms and shared textbooks to cut costs.
Traders say while customer numbers are high, actual spending has remained cautious. “Parents are buying, but very carefully. Most of them are negotiating prices or buying fewer items than before,” said a bookseller in Nairobi’s CBD.
The situation has been worsened by the broader cost-of-living challenges, with parents juggling school expenses alongside rent, food and transport costs. Several parents appealed to schools to be flexible, especially for families unable to raise full requirements before reporting day.
Despite the financial strain, parents said they were determined to ensure learners report to school prepared. Education stakeholders have encouraged parents to plan early in future terms to avoid last-minute pressure, while also urging schools to be considerate of the economic realities facing many households.
