
President William Ruto today, December 18, presided over the unveiling of newly completed affordable housing units in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Nairobi, marking a major milestone in the government’s housing agenda aimed at improving living standards for low-income residents.
The ceremony, held within the Mukuru Kwa Njenga informal settlement, was attended by several top government officials and leaders, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. Local leaders, housing officials, and hundreds of residents also turned up for the event, which symbolised renewed hope for dignified housing in one of Nairobi’s most densely populated areas.
Speaking during the event, President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the Affordable Housing Programme, describing it as a key pillar of economic empowerment, job creation, and urban renewal. He noted that the Mukuru project was designed not only to provide decent homes, but also to improve access to clean water, sanitation, electricity, and social amenities.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki echoed the President’s remarks, saying the project demonstrated the government’s resolve to address the long-standing housing deficit affecting millions of Kenyans living in informal settlements.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja welcomed the initiative, terming it a game-changer for urban transformation in the capital. He said the county government would continue to work closely with the national government to ensure residents benefit from safe, affordable, and well-planned housing.
Residents of Mukuru Kwa Njenga expressed optimism, with many describing the project as a turning point that promises improved safety, health, and dignity for families that have lived in vulnerable conditions for decades.
The Mukuru Kwa Njenga housing project is part of a wider national plan under the Kenya Kwanza administration to deliver affordable homes across the country, targeting ordinary Kenyans and transforming informal settlements into planned, livable communities.
