The death of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga has been ranked as the most significant event of 2025 by Kenyans, according to a new end-year survey. The poll shows that 30% of respondents cited Odinga’s passing as the single event that most defined the year, placing it far ahead of other major national developments.
Raila Odinga died in October while undergoing medical treatment abroad, an event that plunged the country into mourning and prompted widespread reflection on his decades-long political career. His death was followed by a state funeral and massive public turnout, underscoring his enduring influence on Kenya’s political landscape.

According to the survey, Gen Z-led protests ranked second, with 12% of respondents saying the demonstrations were the most significant event of the year. The protests, largely driven by young people, captured national attention and reshaped public discourse on governance and accountability.
Economic pressures, particularly the high cost of living, came third at 10%, reflecting the daily struggles faced by many households throughout the year. Other events mentioned by respondents included political realignments, corruption scandals and insecurity, though each attracted single-digit percentages.
Analysts say the findings highlight the emotional and symbolic weight of Raila Odinga’s death, noting that for many Kenyans it marked the end of an era. The survey suggests that while 2025 was shaped by multiple defining moments, none matched the national impact and historical significance attached to the passing of one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
