Manchester United fans are worried after one of their expensive signings was completely ignored during the pre-season match against Fiorentina.

The Red Devils played the Italian side at Old Trafford on Saturday. The game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, but United won on penalties.

The friendly match came just hours after United announced their new signing, Benjamin Sesko, from RB Leipzig for £74 million. The 22-year-old striker, however, did not play as the match came too soon after his arrival.

Even without Sesko available, it was still bad news for Rasmus Hojlund. Instead of giving the £72 million striker some game time, manager Ruben Amorim made surprising choices.

Mason Mount started in a “false No9” position, playing between Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. The three were presented to the fans before the match, alongside Sesko and Diego Leon.

When Mount was substituted, many expected Hojlund to finally get his chance. Instead, Amorim brought on Manuel Ugarte, a midfielder, leaving Hojlund on the bench until the final whistle.

This decision shocked United fans, especially because it was the last pre-season game before next weekend’s Premier League opener against Arsenal.

Supporters quickly reacted on social media. One fan wrote: “He’s not subbing Hojlund on, pack your bags buddy.”

Another posted: “Rip the No9 off him and stick it on Sesko.”

A third added: “Hojlund not even getting sympathy minutes off the bench now, he’s being shipped to the bomb squad.”

A fourth wondered: “Hojlund didn’t get any minute. Sure he’s leaving aye?”

And a fifth asked: “Has Ruben decided to sell Rasmus Hojlund?”

Hojlund joined United from Atalanta in 2023 and scored only four Premier League goals last season. Many fear he will now be second choice behind Sesko.

Reports say Manchester United are ready to sell him for around £40 million. AC Milan are interested in taking him on loan, with a £35 million option to buy next summer.

If the move happens, it would see Hojlund return to Serie A, where he made his name before joining the Premier League.

However, the 22-year-old says he still wants to fight for his place at Old Trafford. Speaking during United’s recent USA tour, he said:

“The club has told me nothing so far. The most important thing for me is to keep working hard and stay focused. My plan is to stay and fight for my spot.”

Hojlund admitted last season was difficult:

“Last season was a bit rough and I’ve tried to sharpen myself over the holidays. It was tough for all of us. I should have done better, everybody knows.”

With the Premier League season just days away, the question remains, will Rasmus Hojlund stay and fight for his place, or will he pack his bags and head to Milan?

For now, the future of United’s £72 million man is hanging in the balance. Fans will be watching closely to see if Ruben Amorim gives him a chance when the real action begins.
