Several top-ranking officers at Nairobi’s Central Police Station have been suspended by Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, following the suspicious death of Albert Ojwang’, a teacher who died while in custody.

Ojwang’ had been arrested in Homa Bay on Saturday over a controversial post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which authorities labeled as “derogatory.” He was then transferred to Nairobi by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and held at Central Police Station for further inquiries.

Police claim Ojwang’ took his own life by injuring himself in his cell, where he was reportedly alone. He sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead on Sunday morning after being taken to a hospital.

However, human rights advocates have rejected the police’s version of events, casting doubt on the suicide explanation and demanding justice. The incident has ignited public outrage, with protests and growing calls for police accountability.

In response, IG Kanja ordered the suspension of several officers, including the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the duty officer on shift at the time, the cell guard, and all officers stationed at the report office during the incident. Any others found to be connected will also face disciplinary measures.

Kanja emphasized that these actions are meant to allow the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct a comprehensive and unbiased investigation.

Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri reiterated the force’s dedication to upholding human rights, justice, and transparency.

The case has sparked widespread attention online, with groups like the Law Society of Kenya calling for a prompt and thorough investigation.
