Murang’a County, Kenya, Police in Kiharu constituency are investigating a heartbreaking incident in which a 24-year-old woman is alleged to have drowned her two young children in River Mathioya.
According to local authorities, the woman is suspected of throwing her children, aged seven and one, into the fast-flowing river early Thursday morning. The motive behind the horrific act remains unclear, as detectives continue to gather information from witnesses and family members.
Residents of the area were left in shock after learning about the tragedy. Several villagers who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident said they saw the woman standing by the riverbank before she was apprehended by members of the public and handed over to police.
Murang’a County Police Commander confirmed the incident, noting that a multi-agency rescue operation is underway to retrieve the children’s bodies. Divers from the Kenya Red Cross and local volunteers have joined efforts in the search, which has been hampered by strong river currents and rising water levels.

“We have deployed a team to help recover the bodies. The suspect is currently in custody and will undergo a mental assessment before further legal action is taken,” said the police commander.
The community has called on mental health experts and religious leaders to counsel families affected by the tragedy, describing the event as deeply distressing.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging residents to seek help when overwhelmed by domestic or psychological challenges rather than resort to violence.
