Edwin Sifuna, the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has made a strong promise. He says he will resign from his position if his party supports President William Ruto and his party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), in the 2027 elections.
Sifuna, who is also the Nairobi Senator, spoke during a women’s fundraiser in Trans Nzoia County on Sunday. He made it clear that he is loyal to ODM and does not agree with any plan to work with Ruto.

The senator said he is committed to ODM’s values and will never be part of any agreement that supports the current government. He strongly believes that ODM should stay in the opposition.
Sifuna responded to critics who have recently been asking him to resign. He said he will only resign if ODM decides to support UDA in the next general election.

He also attacked those who doubt his loyalty to ODM. Some people believe his public comments don’t always match what the party says.
But Sifuna was clear. He said he will always read official statements from the party—except one.
“I will read all the updates and releases by the party, except one,” he said. “The day ODM says it has agreed to support UDA in the 2027 elections, I will not read that statement. I will leave.”
This strong statement shows that Sifuna is ready to step down rather than support the ruling party.
He even addressed rumors that MP Jared Okello could replace him as ODM Secretary General.
Sifuna said he respects Okello but joked that he should “stay ready” in case ODM decides to work with UDA.
“I heard some people saying Jared Okello should replace me,” Sifuna added. “He should be ready, because if ODM supports UDA, I will go.”
He also talked about forming new political alliances. He said he is open to working with other leaders who oppose the current government.
Sifuna specifically mentioned Governor George Natembeya of Trans Nzoia as someone he would work with.
He said that removing Ruto from power is more important than sticking with one political party.
Sifuna’s comments are not new. He said something similar in an interview on Citizen TV on July 22.
In that interview, he admitted there are tensions inside ODM. He also said he doesn’t agree with ODM’s recent actions that look like friendship with the government.
“If I am asked to step aside, I will,” he said in the TV interview. “This position is not mine. If the person who gave me this job says I can’t do it anymore, I will leave without blinking.”
His strong words show that he is not afraid to speak the truth, even if it costs him his job.
Some party members believe ODM is no longer acting as the main critic of the government. Instead, they say the party is becoming too quiet.
These critics say ODM should return to its roots and fight for the people, not shake hands with the government.
Sifuna agrees with them. He believes the party must stay true to its mission and stay in the opposition.
For now, all eyes are on ODM’s next move. Will they stand with Ruto or stay in opposition?
And if they choose to join hands with UDA, will Sifuna really resign? His promise is clear. Only time will tell.
