Police in Kiambu County have arrested a woman suspected of killing her 11-year-old daughter in a shocking incident that has left residents in disbelief.

According to authorities, the suspect, identified as Ngina, allegedly strangled her daughter, Irene Waithera, at their home in the early hours of Thursday morning. Neighbours reported hearing distressing noises from the house before police were called to the scene.

Kiambu County Police Commander confirmed the arrest, saying preliminary investigations suggest the mother may have been struggling with personal issues prior to the tragic act. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, though detectives have launched an in-depth investigation to establish the circumstances leading to the incident.

The young girl’s body was taken to the Kiambu Level 5 Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

“We are treating this as a serious case of homicide. The suspect is in custody and will be charged once investigations are complete,” the police commander stated.

Residents of the area described Irene as a cheerful and bright student whose life was cut short in the most painful way. Community leaders have urged families facing domestic or psychological challenges to seek help rather than resort to violence.

This tragic event adds to the growing number of family-related killings being reported across Kenya, raising concerns about mental health awareness and support systems within communities.
