Kenya is once again in mourning following a string of tragic road accidents that have claimed the lives of several police officers and injured schoolchildren, reigniting calls for urgent road safety reforms.
On Sunday evening, four police officers were killed in a devastating crash along the Garissa Highway. According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary police reports, the officers were traveling in an official police vehicle when the driver reportedly lost control at high speed.

The vehicle rolled several times before coming to a stop, killing four officers instantly. Two others sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility, where doctors described their condition as critical.
The National Police Service has not yet released an official statement, but sources confirm investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash. This tragedy adds to a growing list of road-related police deaths this month alone, with over five officers already confirmed dead in separate incidents.

On the same day, a school trip nearly turned fatal after a Bukembe Boys High School bus was involved in an accident near the infamous Kona Mbaya black spot in Bungoma County. The students were returning from the Bungoma County Music Festivals held at Cheptais Boys High School when the bus veered off course and crashed.
Though no fatalities were reported, several students suffered injuries and were promptly taken to Sirisia Sub-county Hospital for treatment. School administrators have confirmed that all injured students are receiving the necessary medical care and that their parents have been informed. Eyewitnesses blamed the treacherous curve at Kona Mbaya for the accident, a bend known for causing multiple crashes over the years.
In a worrying trend, earlier this month on June 3, two more police officers died in a separate road crash after their patrol car collided with a trailer on the Bungoma-Webuye Highway. Less than two weeks later, on June 15, three people, among them a police officer, were killed in another fatal accident along the Kisii-Migori highway. That incident involved a fruit-laden lorry that lost control, collided with oncoming vehicles, and rolled over pedestrians.
The recent spate of accidents underscores the dangerous state of many Kenyan roads and the urgent need for stronger enforcement of traffic regulations, better road maintenance, and mandatory driver training, especially for public and government service vehicles.
As the country mourns the lives lost and prays for the recovery of the injured, authorities are being urged to not only investigate the incidents thoroughly but also implement long-overdue reforms aimed at reducing road carnage and preserving the lives of Kenya’s citizens, uniformed or otherwise.
