Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised Viktor Gyokeres for raising his performances to the “highest level” after the striker scored twice in a convincing 3-0 victory over Sunderland.
Playing at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal took the lead in the first half through Martin Zubimendi, who delivered an impressive opener. Gyokeres, introduced from the bench in the second half, made an immediate impact by scoring just six minutes after coming on. The Sweden international then completed his brace in stoppage time, sealing a dominant win that moved the Gunners nine points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
Speaking after the match, Arteta highlighted confidence as the key factor behind Gyokeres’ recent form.
“Confidence is the magic word,” Arteta said. “When you feel confident, when you feel important, when you feel at your best, that’s when you can really take your game to the highest level.
“We are really behind him in every moment to try to help him and support him. He is delivering and he’s in a really good moment now.”
Gyokeres has faced criticism during his first season in north London, but his latest brace has strengthened his response. He has now scored four goals in as many matches, taking his tally to six goals in his last eight appearances.
Arteta also acknowledged the pressure that comes with wearing the Arsenal shirt, noting Gyokeres’ strong mentality.
“When you put that shirt on, there is a lot of responsibility and huge expectation, and you need to live with that,” he said. “In your journey, there will be moments where things go really well and others where it becomes tough.
“With Viktor, it’s difficult to read his emotions because he looks straight at you. He doesn’t seem too affected by the highs or the lows. He is very demanding of himself and constantly trying to improve. I love his character and his genuine desire to help the team in any role.”
Gyokeres’ impact off the bench once again underlined Arsenal’s strength in depth. The Gunners have now scored nine goals through substitutes in the Premier League this season, more than any other team.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Gyokeres praised the team’s collective effort while acknowledging Sunderland’s challenge.
“The results show it, but Sunderland are a very good side,” he said. “They are strong and good in the air, so it’s always a battle. When you score three goals, it’s a good result.
“We’ve shown all season that players coming from the bench can make a difference. That’s a very good sign, and we have to keep it going.
“We’ve had some great results recently, but it’s always tough. We need to stay sharp in every aspect, prepare our bodies well and focus on winning the next game.”
With Gyokeres finding form and Arsenal continuing to show depth and consistency, Arteta’s side appear firmly in control at the top of the Premier League.
