Former Kenyan presidential candidate and outspoken lawyer Prof. George Wajackoyah has launched a fiery campaign to have Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat slapped with an international travel ban over his alleged interference in the investigation into the death of blogger Albert Ojwang.

Speaking in a live interview on NTV on Monday, Wajackoyah who holds legal practice credentials in both Kenya and the United Kingdom, declared that he would reach out to international bodies including the European Union and the U.S. Congress to impose sanctions on Lagat. He insisted that Lagat should be barred from travelling abroad unless he steps down from office.

“I will personally contact the EU. I practice law in the UK and the EU. I will write to US congressmen to ensure this man does not leave the country unless he steps down,” Wajackoyah stated firmly.

Wajackoyah, a former police officer who once worked at the Central Police Station where Ojwang died in custody, dismissed Kenya’s justice system as deeply compromised. He said the Ojwang case proves that justice can no longer be expected locally and must instead be pursued through international pressure.

“The criminal justice system in this country does not work, has never worked, and will never work,” he said. “We are turning to the West because that is the only way justice can be served, unless we borrow a leaf from Burkina Faso.”

The vocal lawyer also demanded the resignation of Deputy IG Lagat and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing them of failing to take accountability in the ongoing scandal. He criticized the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for a slow and inadequate response, accusing the institution of shielding those involved.

However, Wajackoyah cleared Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja of blame, asserting that Kanja had no direct involvement in the suspicious events surrounding Ojwang’s death.

Recalling his time at Central Police Station, Wajackoyah claimed his experience gives him unique insight into the police culture at the station. He went as far as alleging that Lagat’s public demeanor and body language suggested guilt.

“I have been a police officer for so many years. I started at Central Police Station as a police constable. I understand the dynamics. The accuser cannot be the judge,” he said. “I can read these things spiritually.”

Ojwang’s arrest came after Deputy IG Lagat reportedly filed a complaint against him for defamation. The deceased blogger allegedly ran a social media account with over 13,000 followers that accused Lagat of corruption within the National Police Service.

IG Kanja confirmed that Ojwang was taken into custody for questioning related to the accusations. However, the influencer died while still detained, sparking public outcry and calls for justice.
