Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revealed that the United Opposition coalition will unveil its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election by the first quarter of 2026.
Speaking during an end-of-year address on December 30, 2025, Kalonzo said the opposition alliance is keen on settling on a flag bearer early to allow ample time for consultations, coalition building and nationwide campaigns ahead of the polls.
According to the former Vice President, the coalition’s leadership believes that early clarity on its presidential candidate will strengthen unity among opposition parties and give Kenyans a clear alternative to the current administration. He noted that the candidate is expected to be announced by March 2026.
Kalonzo emphasized that the decision will be reached through broad consultations among coalition partners to ensure the selected candidate has national appeal and the capacity to address the country’s economic and governance challenges. He added that the process will prioritize unity, inclusivity and consensus to avoid divisions that have previously weakened opposition efforts.
The United Opposition brings together several parties and leaders who have been critical of President William Ruto’s administration, particularly on the cost of living, taxation and governance issues. Kalonzo said once the flag bearer is unveiled, the coalition will immediately roll out a coordinated nationwide campaign.
Political observers say the early announcement could give the opposition a strategic advantage by allowing it to consolidate support well ahead of the election season, while also putting pressure on rival camps to clarify their own succession plans.
The 2027 General Election is expected to be highly competitive, with both the ruling coalition and the opposition already positioning themselves for an intense political contest.
