Rwanda clarifies fuel pricing concerns amid public debate

The Government of Rwanda has moved to clarify growing public concerns over fuel pricing, emphasizing that recent increases are driven by global market dynamics rather than domestic policy decisions.

In a series of statements published on X (formerly Twitter), Rwanda’s Deputy Government Spokesperson, Uwera Jean Maurice, explained that fluctuations in international fuel prices particularly for petroleum products such as diesel are the primary factor behind changes observed at the pump.

According to Uwera, diesel (commonly referred to as “mazout”) has seen a notable rise on the global market. This increase has had a direct impact on transportation costs, particularly for heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and public transport buses, which rely heavily on diesel. As transport costs rise, the effects cascade through the economy, influencing the prices of goods and services, including petrol.

He stressed that Rwanda’s fuel pricing mechanism is closely tied to international supply conditions, and that local authorities do not arbitrarily set prices. Instead, adjustments reflect import costs and broader market realities.

Addressing comparisons between petrol and diesel, Uwera noted that while petrol may appear less affected in the short term, the broader economic impact of rising diesel prices is significant due to its central role in logistics and supply chains. Trucks transporting goods and buses carrying passengers bear the brunt of these increases, indirectly affecting consumers across multiple sectors.

He further clarified that any changes in fuel pricing should be understood within this global context, urging the public to consider the interconnected nature of energy markets and economic systems.

The government’s remarks come at a time of heightened public attention to the cost of living, with fuel prices often serving as a key indicator of broader economic pressures.
