Several top-ranking officers at Nairobi’s Central Police Station have been suspended by Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, following the suspicious death of Albert Ojwang’, a teacher who died while in custody.
Ojwang’ had been arrested in Homa Bay on Saturday over a controversial post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which authorities labeled as “derogatory.” He was then transferred to Nairobi by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and held at Central Police Station for further inquiries.

Police claim Ojwang’ took his own life by injuring himself in his cell, where he was reportedly alone. He sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead on Sunday morning after being taken to a hospital.
However, human rights advocates have rejected the police’s version of events, casting doubt on the suicide explanation and demanding justice. The incident has ignited public outrage, with protests and growing calls for police accountability.
