The AFC/M23 movement has accused the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo of breaching successive peace agreements after what it described as a drone attack on civilians in Masisi Territory, North Kivu.

In a statement released Tuesday evening by spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, AFC/M23 said the agreements signed between Kinshasa and the movement have become “nothing more than a cynical sham” allegedly ignored by the Congolese authorities whenever convenient.

According to the statement, on  Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at around 5:05 p.m.  , forces allied to Kinshasa used a   CH-4 attack drone   to strike the densely populated area of   Kibati   and surrounding villages in Masisi Territory.

The movement claims several homes were destroyed in the bombardment, increasing fears over the safety of civilians already trapped in conflict zones.

No immediate confirmation or response had been issued by the Congolese government or FARDC at the time of publication.

The allegations come as eastern Congo continues to face instability despite multiple ceasefire efforts and regional peace initiatives aimed at ending violence in North Kivu.

Masisi remains one of the hardest-hit territories, with repeated clashes displacing thousands of civilians and worsening humanitarian conditions.
